Businessman Don Wehby has officially resigned from Jamaica’s Senate, creating a second vacancy in the nation’s Upper House of Parliament for the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) to fill.
Wehby, who previously served as a minister without portfolio in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service, recently took temporary leave from his role as Group Chief Executive Officer at GraceKennedy Limited, citing health reasons. His departure from the Senate comes just weeks after Matthew Samuda, another JLP member, resigned in September to focus on his successful campaign for the North East St Ann constituency in the House of Representatives.
Following his election, Samuda returned to his ministerial duties in the Ministry of Growth and Job Creation, leaving the Senate seat vacant.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness expressed gratitude for Wehby’s contributions, commending his “sterling national service” to the Senate. “Senator Wehby has been a steadfast advocate for the needs of the Jamaican people, bringing invaluable commercial and entrepreneurial insights into the legislative process. Throughout his tenure, he has championed policies that reflect his commitment to shared prosperity, economic stability, and sustainable national development,” Holness stated.
Holness further praised Wehby’s unique contributions, emphasizing how his private sector experience enhanced the government’s approach to national policy. “Don’s presence in the Senate has been instrumental in shaping policies that support both our economic goals and the interests of the Jamaican people,” Holness said. “His contributions have brought a unique private sector perspective to national governance, ensuring the Administration’s approach remains balanced and forward-looking. We are deeply saddened by his departure. On behalf of the people and the Government of Jamaica, I thank Senator Wehby for his contribution to the Senate and wish him a speedy recovery.”
With Wehby and Samuda’s seats now open, the JLP is expected to nominate successors in the coming weeks.
