Legendary Jamaican musician Jimmy Cliff has achieved a significant career milestone, earning his first Silver certification in the United Kingdom for his 1993 cover of Johnny Nash’s classic hit “I Can See Clearly Now.”
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) awarded the song the Brit Certified Silver Award on Friday, October 18, after it surpassed 200,000 sales in the UK, as reported by The Official Charts Company.
Originally written and recorded by Johnny Nash in 1972, “I Can See Clearly Now” became an international hit, known for its hopeful and uplifting message. Cliff’s rendition of the song, however, brought renewed global attention to the track when it was featured in the soundtrack of the Disney film Cool Runnings, a popular movie based on the true story of Jamaica’s first Olympic bobsled team.
Cliff’s version of “I Can See Clearly Now” infused the track with a fresh energy, blending the upbeat essence of Nash’s original with the distinctive rhythmic influences of Jamaican music.
Upon its release, Cliff’s cover charted globally, reaching No. 23 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 18 on the UK Singles Chart. Over the years, the song has remained an anthem of positivity and is often regarded as one of Cliff’s standout hits in his extensive catalog. While Cliff is known for iconic songs like “Many Rivers to Cross” and “The Harder They Come,” “I Can See Clearly Now” remains a timeless favorite for many fans, particularly due to its association with Cool Runnings.
With a career spanning over five decades, Jimmy Cliff is celebrated for his pioneering contributions to reggae and ska music. He is one of the few reggae artists to receive an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and his influence continues to inspire musicians worldwide.
Cliff’s ability to blend powerful social messages with infectious rhythms has cemented him as a global music icon, and this latest recognition in the UK is another testament to his enduring legacy.
