The Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) has officially approved the renaming of Ashoka Road in Waterhouse, St Andrew, to Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce Drive in recognition of the track and field icon’s extraordinary achievements and contribution to Jamaica.
The motion to rename the road, where Fraser-Pryce was born and raised, was moved by Byron Clarke, councilor for the Waterhouse Division, during the council’s meeting on Tuesday. Clarke emphasized that Fraser-Pryce’s legendary status both on and off the track makes her “more than deserving of this honor,” adding that the renaming will serve as a lasting inspiration to future generations in the community.
“As the local representative for the division, I recognize and memorialize Mrs. Fraser-Pryce for her determination, commitment, resilience, patriotic fervor, and willingness to serve her country and community. She embraces life with a passion of purpose, through hard work and an unwavering spirit,” Clarke stated.
He continued, “Her greatness and worthiness for this recognition cannot be defined solely by her athletic accomplishments; her true value transcends athleticism. She is a beacon of hope and inspiration for all.”
Symbol of national pride
Fraser-Pryce, a 10-time World Champion and eight-time Olympic medallist, has been a symbol of national pride, consistently delivering outstanding performances on the global stage throughout her career. Her remarkable journey from humble beginnings on Ashoka Road to becoming one of the greatest sprinters in history has touched the hearts of many Jamaicans, particularly in Waterhouse, where she still plays an active role in the community.
Mayor of Kingston, Councilor Andrew Swaby, affirmed the significance of the renaming and hinted at further plans to celebrate Fraser-Pryce’s legacy. He revealed that discussions have begun with key stakeholders, including representatives from her alma mater, Wolmer’s Girls’ School, and members of her Pocket Rocket Foundation.
“Shelly-Ann’s contribution to Jamaica’s sporting legacy is unparalleled, and we are honored to rename the road in her community to celebrate her achievements. There are ongoing discussions to ensure that this tribute is fitting of her stature, and we’re involving key partners to make it a memorable occasion,” Swaby remarked.
