Shaw and Layzell lead City to 2-0 triumph over holders Barcelona in Women’s Champions League

Naomi Layzell made an unforgettable debut in the Women’s Champions League as she played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s stunning 2-0 victory over defending champions Barcelona on Wednesday. Layzell, who spent last season with Bristol City in the Women’s Super League, was instrumental in both goals at the Joie Stadium, capping a remarkable night for the English side.

City, returning to Europe’s elite competition for the first time since their quarter-final exit to Barcelona in 2021, sought redemption against the Catalan giants. Despite a shaky start that saw Caroline Graham Hansen hit the post after just three minutes, and Lauren Hemp striking the woodwork soon after, City grew into the game and asserted themselves.

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Vivianne Miedema’s pinpoint header at the back post set up Layzell to score with a well-timed slide into the net. The young defender’s goal gave City a vital lead and set the tone for what would be an impressive team performance.

Resilient under pressure

Barcelona, who had scored in all but one of their last 79 matches, ramped up their efforts in the second half in search of an equalizer. Aitana Bonmati came close, forcing a fine save from City goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita, while Claudia Pina’s effort narrowly missed the target. However, the English side remained resilient under pressure, and their defensive discipline proved crucial.

With 13 minutes remaining, City delivered the decisive blow. Layzell, again at the heart of the action, provided a perfectly weighted through ball for Khadija Shaw. The Jamaican forward evaded a challenge from Patri Guijarro and coolly rounded Barcelona goalkeeper Cata Coll to double the lead, securing a memorable victory for City.

The win placed Gareth Taylor’s side level on points with Hammarby in Group D, with the Swedish team also securing a 2-0 win over St. Pölten earlier in the day.
