Reggae Boyz head coach Steve McClaren has made it clear that his team is heading into Thursday’s Nations League Group B clash against Nicaragua with one objective—claiming all three points.
Despite the challenge of playing on a rarely used artificial surface, McClaren emphasized there would be no excuses as Jamaica seeks to maintain its position at the top of the group.
Speaking ahead of the match scheduled to kick off at 9:00 pm (Jamaica time) at Estadio Nacional in Managua, McClaren stated, “We are coming here to win the game. We respect Nicaragua, no doubt, they are a very good team, very comfortable in possession, but we must produce our quality and stay focused.”
Group B leaders
Jamaica, currently leading Group B on goal difference with four points from two matches, will look to build on their recent victory against Honduras. Forward Michail Antonio, who scored his first goal of the campaign in that match, will be keen to add to his tally as the Reggae Boyz aim for consistency in their campaign.
However, Nicaragua presents a formidable challenge. They are unbeaten in their last 14 CONCACAF Nations League matches, with 10 wins and four draws. Forward Widman Talavera has been a key player, scoring in both of Nicaragua’s opening matches in September. A win for the Nicaraguan side would see them overtake Jamaica at the top of the group.
McClaren acknowledged Nicaragua’s strength, highlighting their technical ability and teamwork. “They don’t have one standout player, but they play well together, work hard for each other, and can keep the ball,” he said, adding that anything less than 100% effort from Jamaica could open the door for their opponents.
Vital win away to Honduras
Reflecting on Jamaica’s journey so far, McClaren noted the improvement after a disappointing draw against Cuba, which was followed by the vital win away to Honduras. “We know we are a very good team, but to be a great team, we need consistency. Tomorrow (today) is going to be a big test for us.”
With both teams locked on four points, victory for either side would give them sole leadership of Group B, increasing the stakes for Thursday’s encounter. McClaren is determined for his team to rise to the occasion. “We are here to win the game, and we are here to make no excuses,” he concluded.
The Jamaicans arrived in the Central American country earlier this week after a few training sessions in Jamaica. They will next host Honduras on Monday.
