The award ceremony, held on September 24 at the President’s House in St. Ann’s, Port-of-Spain, celebrates Aguilleira’s outstanding contribution to cricket.

On behalf of CWI, President Dr. Kishore Shallow praised Aguilleira for her dedication and achievements, saying, “Merissa’s contributions are an inspiration to all. As she moves into other impactful roles within the sport, especially in mentoring younger athletes, we wish her continued success.”

The Hummingbird Medal (Gold) is one of Trinidad & Tobago’s most prestigious honors, awarded for exceptional service in various fields. Aguilleira’s award acknowledges her pivotal role in West Indies cricket and her work in promoting the sport in Trinidad and Tobago.

A key figure in women’s cricket

Though she retired in 2019, Aguilleira remains a key figure in women’s cricket, inspiring future generations with her journey. As captain, she led the West Indies Women to the 2013 ICC Women’s World Cup final and the semi-finals of three ICC Women’s World T20 tournaments. She also played a crucial role in the team that won the 2016 ICC Women’s World T20 title.

Aguilleira’s impressive statistics include over 100 dismissals in One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 70 dismissals in T20 Internationals (T20Is). She has played 112 ODIs and 95 T20Is, amassing 1,752 runs in ODIs and 768 runs in T20Is.

In recent years, CWI Vice President Azim Bassarath and former West Indies cricketer Samuel Badree have also received the Hummingbird Medal (Gold), further highlighting the contributions of cricket figures to the region.
