Dominica brace for flooding from tropical wave

Dominica is currently under a flood warning due to the effects of a tropical wave impacting the island. Authorities are urging residents to stay alert, as heavy rainfall may lead to significant flooding risks. The Dominica Meteorological Service upgraded the flood watch to a flood warning from 9 AM to noon today due to the effects of a tropical wave on the island. This warning indicates that flooding is already occurring or is expected during this period.

The meteorological service stated that “moisture and instability ahead of the tropical wave located east of the Lesser Antilles are likely to bring scattered showers and thunderstorms across the region today.” Rainfall is projected to reach two to four inches, with potentially higher amounts in elevated and eastern areas.

The advisory warns of life-threatening flooding, landslides, and falling rocks. While a decrease in moisture is expected this afternoon, an increase is forecasted overnight into Thursday.

Residents in areas prone to flooding, landslides, and rock falls are urged to exercise caution, especially during Wednesday morning. Overflowing waterways are likely to cause flooding in surrounding regions, and weather conditions could lead to further landslides.

The advisory emphasizes that residents and motorists, particularly those near rivers and streams or in areas susceptible to flash flooding, should remain vigilant throughout the warning period.

The government encourages the public to prepare for adverse weather and to keep informed through official channels for safety updates and guidance.
