Jamaica’s Prime Minister Andrew Holness has announced that a new finance minister has been identified, following news that Dr. Nigel Clarke will be taking up the role of Deputy Managing Director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
Dr. Clarke, nominated by IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, is set to succeed Antoinette Sayeh as one of the IMF’s three deputy managing directors at the end of October.
While Prime Minister Holness did not disclose the name of the incoming finance minister, he assured the public in a statement released on Monday that the transition will be seamless. “The Government has identified successors to Nigel Clarke in both his ministerial and parliamentary responsibilities and there will be a smooth transition in both capacities. Further updates will be provided in due course and the public can expect policy continuity and a continuation of the economic achievements,” he stated.
Prime Minister Holness also congratulated Dr. Clarke on his historic appointment, highlighting that this marks the first time in the IMF’s 80-year history that a citizen of Jamaica, the Caribbean, or Central America has held such a high-ranking position.
“This is a historic and important development in which I take immense pride,” Holness remarked.
Duane Smith tapped as replacement in Clarke’s constituency
In tandem with these developments, the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has announced that Councillor Duane Smith, who represents the Chancery Hall Division, will replace Dr. Clarke as its standard bearer in the St. Andrew North Western constituency.
The JLP’s media release noted that Smith is well-known in the constituency, with a deep-rooted connection, as his father, Derrick Smith, served as MP there for 29 years.
“There will be a smooth transition of Dr. Clarke’s responsibilities as Member of Parliament. As such, Mr. Duane Smith, the three-term Councillor for the Chancery Hall Division, will eventually be the Jamaica Labour Party candidate for the St Andrew North Western constituency, currently represented by Dr Clarke,” the JLP stated.
The JLP emphasized that Dr. Clarke’s appointment to the IMF is a moment of pride for all Jamaicans. “We support his continued service at the global level… Jamaicans of all backgrounds can be proud that a fellow Jamaican who has made his career in Jamaica is being elevated to service in the leadership of a prominent global financial institution. Having Jamaicans in positions of authority and influence in global affairs is good for Jamaica and good for the Caribbean region,” the party affirmed.
