Former Reggae Boyz head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson stated there are “no grudges” following his resignation on Sunday after a disappointing trip to the Copa America.
Hallgrimsson expressed confidence that he is leaving the senior program in “a better place than when I came.”
In a video-recorded statement released on Sunday night, Hallgrimsson took the time to reflect on the positives during his two-year stint with the national program. He emphasized the progress made with the national team and expressed hope that his successor can continue the growth.
“We have at least seen to it that the growth can continue and we don’t need to restart from zero and there is a basis that we can work from,” Hallgrimsson said. “I’ve given a lot of work and time to this project and I would really love to see it continue to grow.”
Historic victory
Hallgrimsson took charge of the Reggae Boyz in 2022, immediately facing a daunting debut match against South American giants Argentina, which resulted in a 3-0 loss. He secured his first win months into his tenure with a 4-1 victory over Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago in the group stages of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Under his leadership, the team reached the semi-finals of the same tournament and claimed a third-place finish in the most recent CONCACAF Nations League. A historic victory away to Canada paved the way for Jamaica’s qualification for the 2024 Copa America.
His final game as coach was on Sunday, a 3-0 loss to Venezuela, resulting in the team bowing out of the Copa America without a win.
