The United States’ dream of another major upset in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup was dashed as cricket powerhouse India secured a decisive seven-wicket victory at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Suryakumar Yadav’s composed half-century guided India into the Super Eight round, while the USA will need a win against Ireland on Friday to keep their hopes alive.
Yadav’s 50 off 49 balls, including two fours and two sixes, anchored India’s chase of the modest 111-run target set by the USA. Alongside Shivam Dube, who contributed 31 not out, Yadav stitched an unbeaten 72-run partnership to see India home at 111-3 in 18.2 overs.
Earlier, India’s left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh dismantled the American batting line-up with a stunning spell of 4-9 from four overs, limiting the co-hosts to 110-8 after India won the toss and opted to field.
Early blows
Despite the early blows from USA’s India-born medium pacer Saurabh Netravalkar, who removed Indian stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli cheaply, Yadav and Dube’s steady partnership ensured there were no further hiccups in the chase.
The game started with a dramatic first over from Singh, who dismissed opener Shayan Jahangir for a golden duck and Andries Gous for two, reducing the USA to 3-2. Despite a brief recovery led by Taylor and Kumar, Singh’s return to the attack ended Kumar’s resistance and further curtailed the hosts’ progress.
Pandya supported Singh’s efforts by removing Aaron Jones and Corey Anderson, leaving the USA with a below-par total to defend.
India’s chase began on a shaky note, with Netravalkar claiming the prized wickets of Sharma and Kohli. Sharma was deceived by a slower ball and fell for just three runs, while Kohli was caught behind for a first-ball duck.
Cautious approach stabilized the innings
Rishabh Pant managed 18 off 20 balls before falling to an Ali Khan delivery that kept low, leaving India at a precarious 39-3. However, Yadav and Dube’s cautious approach stabilized the innings. Their partnership, combined with five penalty runs awarded to India for the USA’s slow over-rate, ensured there were no further alarms.
Yadav’s acceleration in the 17th over, where he took 15 runs off Shadley van Schalkwyk, effectively sealed the game, allowing India to cruise to victory.
With this win, India has confirmed their place in the Super Eight, while the USA will look to bounce back in their crucial clash against Ireland.
