Jamaica’s Khadija Shaw clinches 2024 FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year Award

Jamaican football sensation Khadija Shaw has been crowned the 2024 Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Women’s Footballer of the Year in the United Kingdom, marking a historic achievement in her career.

Representing Manchester City, the 27-year-old striker secured an impressive victory, garnering 53 percent of all votes cast, the highest in FWA history for a women’s award. Shaw surpassed her teammates, Alex Greenwood, and competitors from Chelsea, including Lauren James, to claim the prestigious accolade.

Shaw’s remarkable performance throughout the season, despite recovering from a broken leg, solidified her position as a standout player in women’s football. Since joining Manchester City in 2021, she has demonstrated her prowess on the field, notably scoring 21 goals from 18 league appearances, contributing significantly to her club’s pursuit of the Women’s Super League title.

Poised to receive the Golden Boot as the league’s leading scorer

In addition to being named Footballer of the Year, Shaw is poised to receive the Golden Boot as the league’s leading scorer, further highlighting her exceptional contributions to Manchester City’s success.

Expressing her gratitude upon receiving the award, Shaw expressed feeling “very proud and privileged” to be recognized with such a special honor. She credited her teammates and coaching staff for their support, emphasizing their crucial role in her achievements on the field.
