A year-long initiative aimed at providing financial relief to frequent toll-road users commenced on Monday following the green light from Florida’s legislators last month.
Governor DeSantis unveils toll relief program
In a statement made during an appearance at the Greater Miami Expressway Agency, Governor Ron DeSantis assured citizens that the program, slated to alleviate toll expenses for commuters across Florida, was indeed a reality, dismissing any April Fool’s skepticism.
Program revival amid budget talks
The program’s revival comes on the heels of legislators wrapping up discussions on the state budget (HB 5001) and a separate tax relief package (HB 7073) last month.
Governor DeSantis’ office advocated for the reinstatement of a toll-credit initiative that had previously provided motorists with financial breaks in 2023.
Cost and eligibility criteria
With an estimated cost of approximately $450 million, the program is set to grant 50 per cent credits to motorists equipped with SunPass or other Florida transponders, provided they make 35 or more toll-road trips per month.
These credits would start reflecting on May bills, extending through March of 2025.
Progress on infrastructure projects
In addition to unveiling the toll credit program, Governor DeSantis shared updates on the $150 million Golden Glades highway project in Miami-Dade County.
Recent approvals by the state Cabinet, including bond sales, mark significant progress for the project, which forms a crucial part of the broader transportation initiative titled Moving Florida Forward.
Moving Florida forward initiative
Launched by Governor DeSantis in January 2023, Moving Florida Forward stands as a monumental $7 billion, four-year endeavor aimed at advancing various transportation projects statewide.
The Golden Glades project, expected to enhance connectivity by linking Florida’s Turnpike with Interstate 95, the Palmetto Expressway, State Road 9, and State Road 7, represents just one facet of this ambitious undertaking.
Governor DeSantis emphasized that despite the ongoing construction, progress on the Golden Glades project would be expedited thanks to Moving Florida Forward’s comprehensive approach to transportation development.
