Former Belarusian hockey player Konstantin Koltsov dies in South Florida

Miami-Dade Police on Tuesday confirmed the death of former Belarusian hockey player Konstantin Koltsov, who was coaching in the KHL, in South Florida.

According to Detective Argemis Colome, authorities have ruled Koltsov’s death as an apparent suicide. No foul play is suspected in the incident.

A career in hockey

Koltsov, 42, served as an assistant coach for Salavat Yulaev Ufa for the past two seasons, alongside his role as an assistant for the Belarusian men’s national team. 

His sudden passing has left a void in the hockey community, with national team coach Dmitry Baskov describing it as “an irreparable loss.”

Remembering a leader

Baskov praised Koltsov as an exemplary figure within Belarusian hockey, highlighting his leadership qualities and dedication to the sport. 

Koltsov’s impact extended beyond his playing days; he was revered as a progressive coach and a source of inspiration for many aspiring athletes.

NHL stint and transition to coaching

During his playing career, Koltsov competed in 144 NHL games for the Pittsburgh Penguins from 2003-06, tallying 12 goals and 26 assists. 

Following his time in the NHL, Koltsov predominantly played in the Russian Superleague, later known as the KHL. 

After retiring as a player, he seamlessly transitioned into coaching, ultimately landing roles with Salavat Yulaev Ufa and the Belarusian national team.

Tributes pour in

The Pittsburgh Penguins expressed their condolences to Koltsov’s family and friends, acknowledging his contributions to the team during his tenure. 

Additionally, Salavat Yulaev Ufa, where Koltsov secured a Gagarin Cup championship as a player in 2010-11, mourned his loss, hailing him as a beloved figure who left an indelible mark on the club’s history.
