Escalating violence rocks Haiti amid Prime Minister’s absence

On Thursday, Port-au-Prince, the heart of Haiti, was engulfed in chaos as gunfire echoed through the streets, signaling a dramatic escalation in gang violence. At the center of this turmoil is Jimmy Chérizier, also known as ‘Barbecue,’ the notorious leader of the G9 Family and Allies gang federation.

Chérizier made an announcement in a recorded video, declaring his intent to capture the country’s police chief and government ministers, aiming to thwart Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s return to Haiti.

This power grab attempt by Chérizier unfolds as Prime Minister Ariel Henry is abroad in Kenya, engaged in talks to secure a foreign armed force to assist Haiti in its battle against gang dominance.

Surge in violence

The capital witnessed an abrupt surge in violence, with gunmen targeting Haiti’s main international airport among other sites, propelling a wave of panic across the city.

Businesses, government offices, and schools were forced to shut down, as residents, including young children, scrambled to find safety. The violence has led to the suspension of flights by at least one airline, Sunrise Airways, highlighting the immediate impact on national and international mobility.

Community response and escalation

As the violence persisted into the evening, scenes of desperation unfolded with Haitians fleeing their neighborhoods, their arms raised in a plea for peace amidst the chaos.

Armored vehicles patrolled deserted streets, a stark contrast to the bustling life that usually characterizes Port-au-Prince.

Residents in certain areas took matters into their own hands, erecting roadblocks to fend off gang incursions, a testament to the community’s resilience in the face of growing insecurity.

International engagement and the road ahead

Prime Minister Henry’s international mission to secure support in Kenya comes amid this crisis, highlighting the critical juncture at which Haiti finds itself.
