Following the remarkable victory of the Kraigg Brathwaite-captained Test team over Australia, West Indies’ One-Day International (ODI) captain, Shai Hope, is filled with optimism.
Hope believes that his ODI unit can not only maintain the momentum but also replicate the Test team’s historic feat in their upcoming three-match series against Australia.
The Test series generated significant buzz, especially with the inclusion of seven uncapped players, including the emerging fast bowler Shamar Joseph. Joseph’s exceptional performance, despite a toe injury, led West Indies to a sensational eight-run win, marking their first Test victory in Australia in 27 years.
Five players from the Test squad
The excitement surrounding this historic win still lingers in the air, and Hope’s ODI squad, which features five players from the Test squad, aims to continue the celebrations as they kick off their three-match series on Thursday at 10:30 pm.
In a pre-game press conference, Hope expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “It was a very inspiring win that they had in the last Test. It’s great momentum for us, although it’s a different format. However, it’s a promising sign for us to continue what happened in the last Test in this ODI series.”
Hope also emphasized the upbeat mood in the camp, stating, “The mood in the camp is pretty good. Everyone’s up and ready to roll. Seeing some of these grounds here in Australia, that, in itself, makes you want to play cricket, so the guys are upbeat and ready to go.”
Mixed results
Reflecting on West Indies’ performance in the past year, which included a World Cup qualifying campaign and a loss to India, Hope acknowledged the team’s mixed results. However, they rebounded with notable series victories over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and England, along with a draw against South Africa.
Despite their encouraging performances, Hope is mindful of the fact that West Indies has not won a series against Australia in nearly three decades. He emphasized the team’s approach, stating, “Like we always say in the dressing room, every game matters, not necessarily about series or an opponent. You have to take every single game as a final, and it’s nice to see that the guys are really taking to the new system and the way we’re trying to play our cricket. So yeah, it’s just one game at a time, and then the results will take care of themselves.”
Hope also welcomed the challenge for his relatively inexperienced squad, including eight players with 10 or fewer ODIs under their belts. This series marks the beginning of the rebuilding phase as they aim for possible qualification for the next ODI World Cup in four years.
Hope expressed his confidence in the team’s growth, stating, “Yeah, I think it’s great to widen that pool, and what is a better way to start a career than here in Australia for some of the guys. But yes, I think four years seems like a long time, but it really isn’t, and as many games as these guys can play over that span, I think it’s going to widen the pool and give us a headache when that time comes to hopefully select a strong squad. They would also gain a lot more experience during that time.”
