The Bowerman Award, renowned for recognizing the most outstanding male and female track and field athletes in the U.S. college circuit, has placed a spotlight on these exceptional Jamaican talents.

Leading the charge is Jaydon Hibbert, the 2023 men’s winner hailing from the University of Arkansas. Hibbert, who exhibited unbeatable prowess throughout both the indoor and outdoor seasons, made history by becoming the youngest man ever to claim the coveted male trophy. Now, he aims to etch his name in the annals of the award’s history by potentially securing a repeat victory.

Formidable teammates

Joining Hibbert in the men’s category are two formidable teammates: high jumper Romaine Beckford and the World Athletics Championships long jump silver medalist, Wayne Pinnock. These exceptional athletes have consistently demonstrated their talent and are poised to make their mark on the national and international stage.

On the women’s side, the Jamaican representation remains strong. Ackelia Smith, a long jumper representing the University of Texas, showcases her exceptional skills, while Lamara Distin, a high jumper from Texas A&M University, adds to the Jamaican female presence.

These talented women have demonstrated their prowess in their respective events, and their inclusion on the watch list is a testament to their dedication and hard work.

International experience

Should Hibbert secure victory once again, he would achieve a remarkable feat as the first individual to claim back-to-back Bowerman Awards. The anticipation for the award ceremony, scheduled for December at the annual USTFCCCA event, continues to grow.

It is noteworthy that all three Jamaican men on the watch list, excluding Beckford, represented Jamaica at the prestigious World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary, last year. Their international experience and impressive performances have elevated Jamaica’s status on the global track and field stage.

As the collegiate track and field season unfolds, these Jamaican athletes will undoubtedly be closely watched, and their remarkable achievements are poised to further enhance Jamaica’s rich legacy in the world of sports.
