The Miami Dolphins suffered a disappointing 21-14 home loss to the Buffalo Bills in their regular-season finale on the weekend, resulting in a significant setback.
The Dolphins had an opportunity to secure the AFC’s No. 1 seed, their first division title since 2008, and a rare home play-off game but fell short. As a result, they are now a wild-card team, heading to Kansas City for a match-up with the defending Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs.
Despite leading 14-7 entering the third quarter, the Dolphins couldn’t maintain their advantage. Their offense struggled in the second half, managing just 57 yards and three first downs. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was intercepted by safety Taylor Rapp in the final moments of the game, sealing the Dolphins’ fate. The Bills secured the No. 2 seed with their fifth-consecutive win and fourth-straight division title.
A pivotal moment in the game came with a 96-yard kick-off return touchdown by Deonte Hardy, tying the score at 14. Following a three-and-out for the Dolphins’ offense, Josh Allen led the Bills on a crucial touchdown drive. Despite the Dolphins’ defense forcing turnovers and stops in the red zone, the offense couldn’t capitalize effectively.
Miami’s offense struggled
In the second half, Miami’s offense struggled, gaining only 7 yards on three carries. Buffalo controlled the game with 42 plays in the second half, while Allen’s clutch performance made the difference. Miami’s defense faced challenges due to injuries, with key players sidelined. The Dolphins had opportunities but couldn’t convert Buffalo’s turnovers into sufficient points.
The loss marked Miami’s first two-game losing streak of the season, raising questions about their late-season performance against top-tier opponents. The Dolphins are now 1-5 against play-off teams and face a tough road match-up against the Chiefs, a team they lost to in Week 9.
Despite the challenges, head coach Mike McDaniel is focused on addressing the issues and preparing for the upcoming game against Kansas City. The Dolphins aim to bounce back in the postseason after a late-season skid.
