Jamaica’s international footballer, Leon Bailey, made a significant contribution to Aston Villa’s victory over Burnley, helping the club maintain its title bid in the English Premier League.
Bailey, who plays for the Reggae Boyz, scored a crucial first-half goal as Villa secured a 3-2 win against Burnley, ensuring that the club would finish the year in the top three of the Premier League standings.
Bailey’s goal, his sixth of the season, came in the 29th minute when he capitalized on a pass from Ollie Watkins, finding the back of the net with a shot into the roof of the goal after a deflection. Despite Villa’s early lead, Burnley managed to equalize quickly when Zeki Amdouni acrobatically volleyed in a header from Dara O’Shea’s high free-kick.
Villa reclaimed the lead in the 42nd minute when Moussa Diaby tapped in a goal at the back post, assisted by Watkins. Although Burnley appeared to threaten, they had a goal disallowed due to offside.
Douglas Luiz calmly converted a penalty
Villa had an advantage in the second half when Burnley’s Sander Berge received his second yellow card and was sent off, leaving the visitors with 10 players for the remaining 35 minutes of the match. Despite a flurry of opportunities for Villa, they failed to convert any of them.
Burnley took advantage of Villa’s missed chances when Lyle Foster scored in the 71st minute. However, Villa secured the win late in the match when Douglas Luiz calmly converted a penalty after Aaron Ramsey fouled Jhon Duran in the box.
This victory propelled Villa to 42 points in the Premier League standings, securing their position in second place behind Liverpool on goal difference. Villa will continue their title bid in the New Year’s Day match when they host Newcastle United.
