Jaydon Hibbert, hailed as Jamaica’s “WunderKid,” has had a remarkable and history-making year in the world of athletics, solidifying his status as one of the most exciting athletes of 2023.
At just 18 years old, Hibbert achieved the unprecedented feat of becoming the youngest recipient of The Bowerman Award, the highest collegiate honor in track and field.
His remarkable achievements in 2023 include a flawless NCAA season where he claimed victory in both the SEC and NCAA triple jump competitions, establishing an undefeated record. Moreover, he obliterated a 38-year-old outdoor collegiate triple jump record that had not been challenged since the 1980s.
Unique sense of style and confidence
Hibbert’s accomplishments extend beyond the track, as he made a memorable entrance at the award ceremony donning a stylish baby pink suit, a furry white coat draped over his shoulders, and statement sunglasses, showcasing his unique sense of style and confidence.
As an athlete, Hibbert holds the title of the 2023 world leader in the triple jump with an impressive mark of 17.87 meters. Notably, he is the sole individual under the age of 20 ranked among the top 50 triple jumpers in the world.
With his remarkable achievements, Jaydon Hibbert is on a path to joining the ranks of Jamaican track and field legends such as Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Elaine Thompson-Herah.
Highest honor a student-athlete can receive in collegiate track and field
The Bowerman, often likened to the Heisman Trophy in American collegiate football, is the highest honor a student-athlete can receive in collegiate track and field. Past recipients include track and field icons like Sha’Carri Richardson, Galen Rupp, and Olympic champion Athing Mu.
Hibbert, a native of Kingston, Jamaica, completed his freshman year at the University of Arkansas, and his impact on collegiate athletics has been nothing short of extraordinary. Named the Southeastern Conference (SEC) field athlete of the year in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, one of his standout moments of the year was his 17.87-meter jump at the SEC Outdoor Championships, which not only made him the world leader for the year but also placed him at No. 13 on the all-time world list.
While he experienced an injury during his debut at the World Athletics Championships, temporarily sidelining his gold medal aspirations, Hibbert’s combination of talent, style, and record-breaking performances has firmly established him as a rising star in the world of athletics. As the youngest-ever recipient of The Bowerman Award, his freshman-year achievements offer a promising glimpse into a future that follows in the footsteps of Jamaican athletic greats.
