West Indies ‘A’ endured a resounding 232-run defeat against South Africa ‘A’ in the second four-day “Test,” concluding a challenging match at Buffalo Park.
Starting the final day at 134 for five and needing an improbable 308 runs for victory to chase down South Africa ‘A’s imposing target of 442, the West Indies ‘A’ team faced a steep challenge and ultimately succumbed, managing to post only 209 runs in their second innings before lunch.
The visitors displayed little resistance, and their batting performance continued to disappoint, with Tevin Imlach contributing 34 runs and Akeem Jordan and Kevin Sinclair adding 21 runs each. The West Indies ‘A’ side was largely dismantled by the off-spin of Dane Piedt, who claimed three of the final five wickets to finish with six for 79 in the innings and match figures of 11 for 107, following his five-wicket haul in the first innings.
A tragic run-out
Kevin Sinclair, starting the day at 15 not out, was the first to depart in the morning’s third over, followed by Abhijai Mansingh, who fell after adding just five runs. Tevin Imlach, who resumed his innings at 16, suffered a tragic run-out after facing 84 balls and striking four boundaries, leaving West Indies ‘A’ in a precarious position at 164 for eight.
A brief resistance came from Akeem Jordan, who played a quick 27-ball innings, forming a 37-run partnership for the ninth wicket with fellow fast bowler Shamar Joseph, who contributed 18 not out. However, Jordan’s dismissal, caught at first slip off Piedt, led to a heated reaction from the right-hander, who voiced his frustration before departing. This dismissal marked Piedt’s fifth wicket.
The final West Indies ‘A’ batsman, Jair McAllister, could only last eight balls before playing down the wrong line against Piedt, resulting in his stumps being shattered.
With this convincing victory, South Africa ‘A’ leveled the three-match series 1-1. The final “Test” is set to commence on Tuesday in Bloemfontein.
