Cricket West Indies (CWI) has officially announced that the Commonwealth of Dominica will no longer serve as a host country for matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, scheduled for June 2024.
Dominica was initially chosen as one of the host venues for this highly anticipated tournament, joining six other West Indian nations, including Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports, and Community Development in Dominica has confirmed this decision. Despite Dominica’s strong enthusiasm to host matches and their substantial efforts up to this point, the government evaluated proposed timelines after consulting with their contractors. After careful consideration, it was concluded that there would not be sufficient time to fulfill all the obligations outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding between CWI and the Government of Dominica.
CWI understands the situation
Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI, expressed appreciation for the Government of Dominica’s dedication in preparing to host matches as part of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. He acknowledged the reasons cited for the decision and affirmed CWI’s understanding of the situation. Grave also expressed optimism about future collaborations with the Government of Dominica and the Dominica Cricket Association to host international matches.
Fawwaz Baksh, the Tournament Director for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, emphasized that hosting tournaments of this magnitude often involves unforeseen circumstances that necessitate adjustments and alterations to plans. Such adaptability is an inherent aspect of any large-scale event, and contingency plans have been established for all operational areas related to hosting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.
CWI and the ICC are actively working on finalizing the complete match schedule, and an official announcement with these details is expected to be made soon.
