The controversial MP for Westmoreland Central and his partner made national news in April 2021 when Wright was allegedly caught on video allegedly beating a woman with a stool.

Both Wright and Singh made separate assault reports to the police at the time, but none of them offered statements to allow for prosecution.

Activists, politicians and regular citizens later took to the streets with placards calling for Wright to resign and for new laws that protect victims of abuse. The protest was part of a larger campaign called “We Naa Ease Up.” Some 80 Jamaican groups and individuals signed on to the campaign calling for the resignation of Wright and a change in legislation.

After pressure from local and diaspora groups, Wright resigned from the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). He returned to Parliament as an independent member.

The MP never addressed the abuse allegations, but later said he does not support any form of abuse. Wright said that he will be supporting any and every change to domestic abuse legislation made in parliament.

“Of course, I will support them (legislative changes). I don’t support the use of abuse to anyone, whether to women, men, boy or girl. [Not] even animals,” insisted Wright during a sit-down at his Westmoreland Central constituency office months after the video went viral.

JLP is yet to state who will run in the seat occupied by Wright, who says he is still a supporter of the party. Wright was present at the JLP’s 80th annual conference in Kingston on Nov. 26.
