West Indies captain Hayley Matthews played a pivotal role as her struggling Melbourne Renegades team brought an eight-game losing streak to a halt with a tense two-run victory over Brisbane Heat.
The 25-year-old all-rounder, whose own form had mirrored that of her team, delivered a Player-of-the-Match performance. Matthews top-scored with a season-best 46 runs, setting up a competitive total of 169 for seven off their 20 overs at Allan Border Field.
Matthews also made a significant impact with her off-spin, claiming a wicket, taking two catches, and bowling a brilliant final over that restricted Heat to 167 for nine off their 20 overs. Brisbane Heat’s opener, Grace Harris, put up a valiant effort with a stunning 65 off just 36 deliveries.
Second win of the season
The victory marked only the Renegades’ second win of the season and came after a prolonged period of poor form that had left them at the bottom of the Women’s Big Bash League with just four points. Their previous win had occurred on October 23, when they defeated Adelaide Strikers by 86 runs before enduring a demoralizing losing streak that had dashed their title aspirations.
In their innings, the Renegades faced an early setback as England opener Tammy Beaumont was dismissed for a 17-ball 20. However, fellow opener Emma de Broughe steadied the ship with a valuable 42 from 35 balls, featuring three fours and a six. She combined with India’s Harmanpreet Kaur (22) to put on a 42-run partnership for the second wicket.
When Harmanpreet was dismissed at the start of the 10th over, Matthews entered the fray and injected further momentum into the Renegades’ innings. Matthews played a crucial role in a 66-run, third-wicket partnership with de Broughe, hitting seven fours and a six during her 28-ball cameo.
Standout performer in the bowling department
Heat’s Nicola Hancock, a 28-year-old seamer, was the standout performer in the bowling department, claiming four wickets for 20 runs from her four overs.
In the run chase, Matthews provided a crucial breakthrough for the Renegades by removing opener Georgia Redmayne for just two runs in the second over with only 13 runs on the board. Grace Harris, the standout performer for Heat, played aggressively, accumulating eight fours and two sixes, and put on a 35-run partnership for the second wicket with Bess Heath (13).
However, wickets fell at regular intervals afterward, leaving the Renegades in control of the contest. With just six runs required from the final over, the game remained in the balance, but Matthews kept her nerve and conceded only three runs, securing the victory for her team.
