In a continuation of her recent struggles, Hayley Matthews, the West Indies captain, faced disappointment once more as her Melbourne Renegades team suffered a seven-wicket defeat to the Sydney Sixers in Perth, Australia.
The Renegades could only muster a total of 104 runs before being dismissed, leaving a ball to spare at the WACA Ground. The Sydney Sixers effortlessly chased down the small target, reaching victory with nearly five overs to spare.
Despite her impressive performances for the West Indies in last month’s Twenty20 series against Australia, Matthews has failed to replicate that form in the Women’s Big Bash League. On Sunday, she could only manage five runs before becoming the first wicket to fall in the second over, courtesy of left-arm spinner Lindsey Smith, who claimed two wickets for 17 runs. Matthews’ tournament total now stands at 99 runs from seven outings, with an average of 14.
Sixth loss in seven games
The defeat marked the sixth loss in seven games for the Melbourne Renegades in this season, leaving them at the bottom of the eighth-team standings with just two points.
In their innings, the Renegades struggled early, sinking to 30 for five in the eighth over. However, Indian star Harmanpreet Kaur provided a ray of hope, top-scoring with 47 runs from 40 balls, including seven fours. She combined with Georgia Wareham (10) for a 27-run partnership for the sixth wicket and later added 33 runs for the seventh wicket with wicketkeeper Josephine Dooley (19).
In response, the Sydney Sixers faced early trouble at nine for two when seamer Sarah Kennedy struck twice in the second over. However, Captain Ellyse Perry played a crucial role in rescuing the chase with an unbeaten 44 runs from 39 balls, featuring half a dozen fours and a six. Perry partnered with Erin Burns (32) for a vital 62-run stand for the third wicket and then shared an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 36 runs with South African Chloe Tryon, who contributed a quickfire, unbeaten 26 runs from just 13 balls.
With this victory, the Sydney Sixers maintained their strong position in the Women’s Big Bash League, while the Melbourne Renegades find themselves at the bottom of the standings, struggling to secure wins in the tournament. Currently, the Adelaide Strikers and Brisbane Heat share the top of the standings with 10 points each.
