This award recognizes the outstanding U20 athlete of the year. Joining Clarke as finalists are the USA’s Erriyon Knighton and Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi.

The nominations for this award reflect exceptional performances witnessed throughout the year at various events, including the World Athletics Championships in Budapest 23, the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst 23, one-day meeting circuits, and other global competitions.

Breaks the world U20 record

Clarke, aged 19, made a significant mark by finishing fourth in the World Championships 400m hurdles held in Budapest in August. He not only equaled but also broke the world U20 record with impressive times of 47.85 seconds in Kingston and 47.34 seconds in Budapest. Clarke is also the Jamaican champion and the CARIFTA Games U20 champion.

Erriyon Knighton, the USA’s representative, claimed the silver medal in the World Championships 200m and secured the title of the USA 200m champion. He further demonstrated his prowess by winning Diamond League races in Florence and Oslo.

Emmanuel Wanyonyi from Kenya, another finalist, secured the silver medal in the World Championships 800m and added to his achievements by becoming the World cross-country mixed relay champion. He also emerged victorious in Diamond League races in Rabat, Paris, and Xiamen.

The winner of the 2023 Men’s Rising Star Award will be chosen by an international panel of experts and will be officially announced on World Athletics’ platforms on December 11, 2023.
