In Super50 Cup action, all-rounder Justin Greaves delivered a stunning performance with a maiden List A century, while leg-spinner Hayden Walsh Jr. took four wickets, helping Leeward Islands Hurricanes secure a commanding 114-run victory over Windward Islands Volcanoes on Tuesday.
Greaves, a 29-year-old who had previously played three One-Day Internationals for West Indies, hammered an impressive 121 runs from 126 deliveries. This remarkable knock propelled the Hurricanes to a total of 293 all out from their allotted 50 overs at Queen’s Park Oval. Jahmar Hamilton contributed 50 runs from 72 balls, while captain Alzarri Joseph added a quick 24 off just 11 balls towards the end of the innings.
In response, Windward Islands Volcanoes struggled and were bowled out for 179 runs in the 43rd over. All-rounder Shamar Springer top-scored with 58 runs off 69 deliveries, while Alick Athanaze and Kavem Hodge made contributions of 39 and 38 runs, respectively. However, Hayden Walsh Jr. played a crucial role in hastening Volcanoes’ demise, taking four wickets for 40 runs.
Volcanoes’ fifth defeat in six appearances
Despite the Hurricanes securing their third win in five matches, the Volcanoes’ fifth defeat in six appearances in the tournament has diminished their chances of advancing to the semi-finals. The Hurricanes remain in contention for a semi-final spot.
During the Hurricanes’ innings, Greaves took command after the early dismissal of Kieran Powell for 11 runs. Greaves struck 10 fours and one six during his century and shared significant partnerships with his teammates. He was the ninth wicket to fall, bowled by Shamar Springer in the penultimate over.
In the chase, the Volcanoes faced early setbacks, losing two wickets for just 25 runs in the fifth over. Despite some efforts to rebuild, a flurry of wickets left the Volcanoes struggling at 75 for five in the 20th over. Springer and Hodge combined for a 60-run partnership for the seventh wicket, but once separated, the Volcanoes’ lower order collapsed, losing their last five wickets for 44 runs.
