Jamaicans living in the Bahamas donate equipment to Black River Hospital

The Hummingbirds Association, a charitable entity formed by Jamaicans based in the Bahamas, recently made a notable donation to Jamaica’s Black River Hospital located in St. Elizabeth.

With an impressive history spanning 45 years, the association continues to foster strong connections with their homeland.

Equipment to enhance patient care 

Valued at $1 million, the assortment of medical equipment bestowed upon the hospital includes digital baby scales, adult scales, blood pressure machines, an examination lamp, and a nebulizer. 

Such instruments play pivotal roles in daily hospital operations, especially when ensuring quality healthcare delivery.

Hospital leaders express gratitude 

Diana Brown-Miller, the hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, spoke warmly about the Hummingbirds Association’s continuous support. 

Highlighting the significant impact of the donation during the handover ceremony held on August 17,  she conveyed that the equipment would significantly bolster their mission to offer top-tier healthcare to patients.

Similarly, Dr. Sheriff Imoru, the Senior Medical Officer, emphasized the essential role of the donated tools in carrying out the hospital’s vital functions.

The Hummingbirds Association’s Commitment Sharon Purser-Cooper, the Public Relations Officer of the Hummingbirds Association, shared the group’s proactive approach. 

She shared that they actively liaise with regional health authorities every year, aiming to discern the pressing needs of hospitals across the island. Upon identifying necessary equipment, fundraising efforts are mobilized to procure the listed items.

In a heartfelt gesture, Purser-Cooper expressed the association’s pleasure in fulfilling this year’s equipment list for the Black River Hospital. 

She commended the hospital staff for their relentless dedication and invaluable contributions towards maintaining a healthy community. 

Furthermore, she gave an assurance of the association’s ongoing commitment to support the institution.

Extending the reach of charity 

The association has set sights on the Princess Margaret Hospital in St. Thomas, indicating plans to donate equipment there as well.

Committed to a broader mission, the Hummingbirds Association’s initiatives also encompass donations to Jamaican schools and providing disaster relief throughout the region.
