Police authorities in Belize have recently taken into custody seven Mexican nationals under the suspicion that they were dispatched by a Mexican cartel to target a prominent drug dealer in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country.
Alleged road consultants under scrutiny
Reports are that the detained individuals assert that their presence in Belize is tied to road construction consultancy. However, their actual motives remain under investigation.
Encounter in the northern districts
According to reports, the group of Mexicans was noticed by Belizean law enforcement during operations in the northern territories, particularly around Corozal.
Police Commissioner, Chester Williams, emphasized that for security reasons, the exact location of their detention remains undisclosed.

Mexican press and ongoing investigations
Williams shared that authorities have gleaned valuable information from Mexican media sources concerning the detainees.
Commissioner Williams assured the public that they are rigorously examining these leads.
He highlighted the need for increased vigilance at the northern borders due to past breaches by Mexicans and the potential influence of Mexican cartels on local inhabitants of the northern districts.
Assessing the true intent of detainees
In response to speculations about the group’s purpose in Belize, Commissioner Williams noted that while they claim to be part of a road consultancy, confirmation is pending.
He also mentioned that they are examining reports from Chetumal’s media to determine the veracity of the group’s intentions, any recent involvement in shootings in Mexico, and possible affiliations with the Caborca cartels known to be active in Mexico’s Quintana Roo region.
