PORT OF SPAIN, TRINIDAD — The Jamaica Scorpions climbed into third place in the Regional Super50 standings with an authoritative 128-run win over the Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) Marooners on Sunday, led by a stellar performance from Carlos Brown and a clinical bowling effort by Jeavor Royal.
Brown’s first-ever List A century, an impressive 121 from 119 balls, paired with Javelle Glenn’s half-century, propelled the Scorpions to a solid total of 289 for eight in their 50 overs at Queen’s Park Oval.
Bowling with precision and pace, Royal swiftly dismantled the Marooners’ top order, taking three wickets in a quick span and leaving their chase in tatters. Eventually, the Marooners were all out for 161 in just 38 overs. The victory lifts the Scorpions to third place with 37 points from five matches, trailing leaders Trinidad & Tobago Red Force (48 points) and the Leeward Islands Hurricanes (38 points).
A rocky start
After winning the toss and opting to bat, the Scorpions faced a rocky start. Captain John Campbell fell for a second-ball duck, bowled by off-spinner Mikkel Govia, and Kirk McKenzie followed shortly after for just one, leaving the Scorpions struggling at 11 for two in the fifth over. But Brown, partnering with Jermaine Blackwood, steadied the innings with a crucial 137-run stand for the third wicket. Blackwood contributed a vital 41 before being bowled by Akeem Jordan.
Brown anchored the innings, striking 12 boundaries and five sixes to reach 121 before being dismissed, leaving the Scorpions at 190 for five in the 38th over. Glenn, with a rapid 52 off 46 balls, joined forces with Odean Smith, who smashed 32 from 24 balls, adding 90 runs in just 11 overs to boost the Scorpions’ score to a challenging 289.
The Marooners’ chase quickly faltered under Royal’s ruthless spell. He trapped both openers, Demario Richards (13) and Johann Jeremiah (1), lbw, and later bowled Shaqkere Parris for six, leaving the Marooners reeling at 30 for three within eight overs. Regular fall of wickets continued, despite a determined effort from the lower order, as the Marooners could only manage 161. Govia finished with commendable figures of 4-29 from nine overs, while McKenzie added 2-20 to the tally.
The Scorpions’ strong all-around performance sees them solidly positioned in the standings, while Barbados Pride, with a game in hand, trails close behind in fourth with 34 points.
