LEÓN, Mexico – Antigua and Barbuda’s senior men’s volleyball team endured a stern baptism in their opening clash of the XVIII Pan-American Cup, falling in straight sets to a relentless Cuban powerhouse on Tuesday.
In Group A action, the Caribbean side fought valiantly but was ultimately undone by Cuba’s precision and power, conceding a 25-19, 25-10, 25-17 defeat.
Spirited resistance, overwhelming force
The “Benna Boys” showed moments of grit, sparking several spirited rallies that briefly disrupted Cuba’s rhythm. Yet the challenge of consistently withstanding Cuba’s explosive serves, unyielding blocks, and clinical attacking proved insurmountable. The scoreline reflected not a lack of effort, but the gulf in experience and execution between the two squads.
Antigua and Barbuda’s setback unfolded on a dramatic opening day of the tournament. Elsewhere, Chile toppled the Dominican Republic 3-1, while Canada claimed a 3-1 victory over Puerto Rico. In the biggest shock, Venezuela stunned the United States in straight sets, while Mexico delighted the home crowd with a 3-0 rout of Suriname, and Colombia cruised past Guatemala 3-0.
Group stage battle ahead
The Pan-American Cup’s structure leaves no room for hesitation, with three groups vying for knockout qualification. For Antigua and Barbuda, the road ahead intensifies: they faced a critical clash with the United States on Wednesday before closing their group stage campaign against Venezuela on Thursday. With elimination looming for teams that falter early, every set and every rally now carries weight as the tournament marches toward its August 31 finale.
