Among the standout competitors was Latasha Jackson, originally from Britain, who emerged as an undeniable star, leaving an indelible mark on the powerlifting world.

Jackson’s remarkable journey to this championship event was fuelled by her aspiration to represent Jamaica in a sport she was passionate about. Inspired by Sami DePass, a renowned figure in powerlifting whose feats she witnessed at the World Championships in Malta, Jackson made her debut on the Jamaican powerlifting scene at the Deadlift Championship.

Her path to becoming a member of the National Powerlifting Association of Jamaica (NPAJ) was a testament to her unwavering resolve. In her own words “Even though I come from Britain, I’ve always wanted to represent Jamaica in something I am passionate about, seeing Sami DePass at the World Championships in Malta inspired me to make the first step which was to compete in a meet in Jamaica.”

Rigorous training regimen

Jackson’s rigorous training regimen included four weekly workouts, focusing on both upper and lower body strength. Bench press, deadlift, and squat formed the core of her training, with a particular emphasis on deadlifts in the final two weeks leading up to the competition. A balanced diet featuring three protein-rich meals a day played a crucial role in sustaining her energy levels for these intense workouts.

At the NPAJ National Deadlift Championship 2023, Jackson’s performance was nothing short of breathtaking. Her first lift of 172.73kg (380lb) set the stage for her dominance. She followed it with an impressive 179.55kg (395lb) lift.

However, it was her third and final lift that left spectators in awe, as she confidently hoisted an astonishing 190.91kg (420lb). This incredible feat secured her a total of 36.34GL Points, crowning her the NPAJ Female Deadlift Champion for 2023.

Upon realizing her victory, Jackson said: “Pure and utter shock! I only wanted to come to participate and watch other lifters, but finding out that I won also was the icing on the cake.”

Forced to make significant adjustments

Jackson’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. Adapting to local weight plates and limited equipment availability in Jamaica required her to make significant adjustments. Yet, her determination prevailed. She offered insights, stating: “Powerlifting is a long-term sport, so you never have to be ‘good enough’ to compete. Once you start, continue asking questions and increasing your knowledge so that you understand how your body works in order to progress both inside and outside the gym.”
