The leadership of the Miami Beach Police Department has experienced a significant transition. On Wednesday, the commissioners announced the appointment of Wayne Jones as the forthcoming head of the city’s law enforcement.
Jones is to assume his new role as police chief on the first of September, succeeding Chief Richard Clements, who is retiring after more than three decades of service.
Historic appointment: Wayne Jones as Miami Beach’s first Black police chief
A long-standing member of the force since 1996, Jones is set to become Miami Beach’s first-ever Black police chief.
His tenure in the department has seen him ascend through all the ranks, serving in numerous capacities.
His most recent role before this appointment was that of deputy chief, a position he occupied since 2019.
Jones’ Journey from patrol officer to police chief
In a statement, City Manager Alina Hudak praised Jones, stating, “Chief Jones has demonstrated his commitment to excellent public service throughout his 27-year career with the Miami Beach Police Department.”
“He began as a patrol officer and gained the respect and admiration of his superiors and peers as he moved up through the ranks. I am confident he will build on MBPD’s legacy and take the department to the next level,” Hudak added.
Jones’ achievements in the department are noteworthy, including the creation of the department’s human trafficking unit.
This unit proceeded to spearhead Miami-Dade County’s investigations and apprehensions in sex trafficking offenses, as pointed out by city officials.
As a community affairs sergeant, Jones was instrumental in forming the blueprint for the nationally lauded Homeless Resource Officer Program.
Upon his appointment, Jones expressed his gratitude stating “I am humbled by this great honor and look forward to leading this remarkable team of men and women who wear the badge with pride.”
“I pledge that the safety of Miami Beach residents, our officers, and our many visitors from around the world will always be my top priority,” he continued.
