Law enforcement evacuated buildings, and nearby businesses and schools were placed on lockdown. No deaths have yet been confirmed by officials.

In a statement, Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare confirmed it was receiving and caring for patients from the shooting. “At this time, details are still unfolding, and we do not yet have specific information to share. However, we want to assure the community that our teams are fully mobilized and prepared to provide the highest level of care and support to all those affected,” a hospital spokesperson said.

A suspect is currently in custody, according to law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the situation. While the extent of the injuries remains unclear, law enforcement is actively investigating the incident.

FSU Alert, the university’s emergency notifications system, issued a warning, notifying the campus of an “active shooter” near the Student Union. The alert urged people on campus to seek shelter immediately and lock all doors and windows. Messages sent via FSU Alert also instructed students and faculty to remain in place while law enforcement cleared rooms on the main campus.

“An active shooter has been reported in the area of Student Union,” the alert posted on X (formerly Twitter) read. “Police are on scene or on the way. Continue to seek shelter and await further instructions. Lock and stay away from all doors and windows and be prepared to take additional protective measures.”

“All classes and university events including athletics events scheduled for Thursday, April 17, 2025, have been cancelled. Individuals not already on the main campus at this time should avoid coming to the Tallahassee main campus,” the university said in another update.

Governor Ron DeSantis offered his condolences and reassured the community, writing on X, “Our prayers are with our FSU family and state law enforcement is actively responding.” Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier echoed these sentiments, confirming his office’s response to the campus.

President Donald Trump also commented on the tragedy, saying, “It’s a shame. It’s a horrible thing. Horrible that things like this take place.”
