Man arrested in Sunrise kidnapping case involving minor

A 51-year-old man is facing multiple serious charges, including false imprisonment, following a reported kidnapping involving a minor, according to the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO).

Deputies were alerted to a possible abduction near 2900 West Sunrise Boulevard and quickly launched an investigation. Members of the BSO Special Victim’s Unit (SVU) were able to confirm the suspect’s vehicle and identify the driver as Torrance Canady.

Working in coordination with the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office, authorities tracked down the vehicle in the 7900 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue in Miami, where they found a young girl in the back seat.

Canady was taken into custody at the scene and transported to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center. Investigators later determined that Canady and the minor were previously acquainted and had an ongoing dispute, which reportedly escalated into the incident that prompted law enforcement response.

In addition to false imprisonment, Canady is also charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
