During Tuesday’s Broward County School Board meeting, deliberations intensified over resolutions advocating for Pride.

The spotlight on LGBTQ+ resolutions

Historically, the board has seamlessly passed 99 resolutions, but this session, two particular resolutions became the center of attention, neither related to the curriculum.

The turnout for the discussion was substantial, with many voicing their opinions.

The resolutions in the spotlight were in favor of LGBTQ+ History Month scheduled for October and Pride Month in June. A mix of opposition and endorsement for both resolutions was evident among attendees.

Past resolutions and their acceptance

Over the past decade, the board has effortlessly endorsed resolutions, including those backing Hispanic Heritage Month, Jewish History Month, and Juneteenth Awareness Day.

School Board Member Debra Hixon clarified that none of these resolutions pertain to the curriculum and are in line with the law.

However, the school board gave the green light to these two resolutions and the remaining 97.

Reports are that two out of the three members who did not back the resolutions were appointees of Gov. Ron DeSantis.

A School Board Member emphasized that these resolutions should remain apolitical and not be linked to activism.
