A Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) deputy is facing multiple charges following an alleged domestic dispute with his girlfriend, leading a judge to find probable cause during a Saturday bond court hearing.
Michel Quinones, 40, was arrested Friday and appeared before a Broward County judge the next day. He is now facing one count each of robbery by sudden snatching without a weapon, tampering with a witness to hinder or delay communication with law enforcement, and battery involving dating violence, according to jail records.
The alleged victim, Tiffany Sastre Carreras, spoke in Quinones’ defense during the hearing, expressing doubt about how the incident was being portrayed by prosecutors.
“I don’t think how the state is presenting the case is how the things happened,” Carreras told the judge.
According to prosecutors, the charges stem from an altercation in which Quinones allegedly took Carreras’ phone after she mentioned calling police.
“Yes, I did tell him that I was going to call the police and that was, between he grabbed my phone or I gave him the phone,” Carreras said, explaining the exchange.
She added that a gap of about 20 minutes had passed between her initial comment and when the phone was taken.
“There were probably 20 minutes in between cause I told him I was going to call the cops but that was outside my house and when he grabbed my phone we were already in the garage. I had my phone in my hand but I was not actively trying to call 911,” she said.
Carreras told the judge she did not believe the robbery charge fit the situation and emphasized that she did not feel endangered.
“I’m not concerned. I’m not in fear of my life or anything like that,” she said when asked about the possibility of future contact with Quinones.
Despite her testimony, prosecutors requested a no-contact order based on initial statements she made to law enforcement.
“She’s not remembering all correctly based off her statement to law enforcement. There was a pretty violent incident. I would recommend no contact at this time,” a state attorney’s office representative said.
The judge set Quinones’ bond at $5,000, placed him under standard pre-trial supervision, and issued a no harmful contact order. He was also ordered not to possess any weapons or firearms.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office has not released a statement regarding Quinones’ current employment status.
