Fresh off what many are calling the most successful Reggae Sumfest in its history, festival mastermind Joe Bogdanovich is adding another major milestone to his legacy. The American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) has announced that Bogdanovich will receive the prestigious International Achievement Award at its upcoming 2025 Hummingbird Gala, set for Friday, October 10, at the iconic Plaza Hotel in New York City.
Bogdanovich will be honored alongside fellow cultural advocate Jason Henzell, who will receive the International Humanitarian Award.
“It’s incredibly meaningful to be acknowledged by an organization like American Friends of Jamaica, which has such a longstanding commitment to Jamaica’s development,” Bogdanovich told Caribbean National Weekly.
“This honour reminds me that the work we do through music, culture, and community has real impact far beyond the stage. It’s a true honour to be recognized, especially alongside someone as impactful as Jason Henzell.”
Caron Chung, Executive Director of the AFJ in a statement said, “We are thrilled to honour Jason Henzell and Joe Bogdanovich, two individuals whose work has transformed lives and strengthened communities across Jamaica. Their vision and unwavering commitment to uplifting others align perfectly with AFJ’s goal of creating lasting, positive change on the island we love.”
The award caps a whirlwind season for Bogdanovich, whose company, Downsound Entertainment, produces Reggae Sumfest. Insiders say the 2025 edition of the iconic festival was one of the most successful ever, with upgraded sound, visuals, and a lineup that blended legends with new wave stars.
“Sumfest 2025 was a culmination of vision, passion, and a relentless team effort that pushed the boundaries of what a Jamaican music festival can be,” Bogdanovich said. “We listened to the fans and made it our mission to raise the bar—from every camera angle to every beat that dropped.”
When asked to reflect on his biggest accomplishment over the past three years, Bogdanovich pointed to the global evolution of Sumfest while preserving its Jamaican core.
“We’ve expanded our reach, uplifted more local talent, and used the platform to support youth, culture, and tourism in powerful ways,” he shared.
Beyond the festival, Bogdanovich is also nurturing the next generation. His son, Joey Bogdanovich, has recently been taking a more active role in the music and events space.
“Seeing my son Joey step into the rhythm of the industry is one of the most rewarding parts of this journey,” said the proud father. “It’s not just about succession, it’s about mentorship, values, and exposing him to the heart and soul of what we do. He’s learning that this business is about more than music; it’s about people, culture, and purpose.”
As he prepares to accept the AFJ honor in October, Bogdanovich remains committed to the mission he’s cultivated over the years: pushing Jamaican music and culture to greater heights.
“What we created was not just a festival—it was a celebration of Jamaican excellence,” he said. “And a reminder that the world is still watching and vibing with us.”
