COLOGNE, Germany – Its been 10 years since Reggae artist Buju Banton last performed at SummerJam, but on July 6, he made his long-awaited return to the German festival as the headliner.
At the European Hip-Hop, Reggae, and Dancehall festival that took place from July 5 to 7 in Cologne at the Fühlinger, Buju graced to stage on night two to perform a melody of hits in front of over 20,000 people each night.
Returning to the SummerJam stage, decked out in a blue outfit, Banton celebrated his first performance outside of the Caribbean region, since his release from a seven-year prison stint in 2018. The performance is also marked as his first stop on the European leg of his ‘Long Walk To Freedom’ Tour.
The last time Banton hit the SummerJam stage was in 2009, sharing the stage with iconic reggae acts like Bunny Wailer, Barrington Levy, Freddie McGregor, and Junior Kelly.
Other reggae and dancehall acts that performed at this year’s SummerJam include Popcaan, Agent Sasco, Richie Spice, Koffee, Protoje, Kabaka Pyramid, and Jimmy Cliff.
Besides being the headliner at SummerJam, the Gargamel also headlined AFAS Live in Amsterdam that same weekend. Later this summer, he will perform at the Border Splash Benefit Concert in Le-Grand Saconnex, Switzerland (31st July), Reggae Sun Ska in Verthieul, France (2nd August), and Reggae Geel in Geel, Belgium (3rd August).
