The Ministry of Labor and Social Security has emphasized the Jamaican Government’s dedication to bolstering bilateral ties with the People’s Republic of China.
Ambassador’s courtesy visit
On Wednesday, August 2, Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr, alongside Minister of State Dr. Norman Dunn and Permanent Secretary Colette Roberts Risden, welcomed Chen Daojiang, the Chinese Ambassador to Jamaica, for a courtesy visit at the Ministry’s North Street office.
During this interaction, Minister Charles acknowledged the longstanding positive ties between Jamaica and its previous Chinese ambassadors. He highlighted the significance of Ambassador Daojiang’s visit to the ministry.
In response, Ambassador Daojiang expressed his satisfaction in connecting with the Jamaican ministers and acknowledged the meeting as a valuable opportunity to explore shared labor market concerns.

Exploring Chinese expertise for the Jamaican workforce
A significant portion of their discussion revolved around the potential for incorporating Chinese proficiency into the Jamaican industry. This includes potential avenues for enhancing the skills of the Jamaican workforce, especially with regards to training.
A notable interest from the Jamaican side was the use of simulators for training scenarios where traditional face-to-face methods might not be feasible. The talks delved into the possibility of nurturing a cadre of expert builders, aiming to expand opportunities for the Jamaican workforce.
There was also emphasis on acquiring technical support from China to reinforce a culture of safety within the Jamaican industrial sector.
Ambassador Daojiang expressed gratitude towards the Jamaican government for creating avenues for Chinese individuals and businesses in Jamaica. He also recognized the trust Jamaica places in the Chinese administration.
Furthermore, he encouraged the Jamaican Government to explore funding opportunities presented by the Global Development Initiative, assuring China’s unwavering support and alliance with Jamaica.
