In an effort to address the issue of slow over rates, the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is introducing the red-card system in the upcoming edition of the tournament, commencing on August 17.

Fielding side rules and penalties

Teams are now mandated to complete their overs within 85 minutes. Should the fielding side fall behind the required over rate by the beginning of the 18th over, an additional player will be required to enter the fielding circle, making it a total of five.

If the delay continues to the onset of the 19th over, another player will be added, making the total six inside the fielding circle.

If the team continues to lag behind the required rate as the 20th over starts, the captain will have to select a player to leave the field, resulting in six players inside the fielding circle.

Umpire’s role in monitoring pace

The batting team is also not exempt from scrutiny; they will be monitored for time-wasting. Following a first and final warning from the umpires, a 5-run penalty will be imposed on the batting team for each instance of time wasting.

This new system demonstrates CPL’s commitment to maintaining the pace of play and adds a new strategic element to the beloved game.
